Marcus Aitken is a contemporary artist and painter, living and working in South London, recently named as Saatchi Arts top 20 emerging artists to watch in 2020.

“Marcus’ rigorous design background shines through in his creative process—building up and distressing multiple layers of pigment on wood panels and canvas, and then applying expressive brushstrokes—ultimately yielding expertly balanced and dramatic compositions.”

– Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator & VP Saatchi Art

Marcus’ paintings are a series of process led works. He uses a combination of layering, distressing and blending to build a multifaceted surface, adding a sense of depth and drama to the work.

Coming from a design background, Marcus has evolved his practice through mixed media, sculpture and jewellery design. He brings his experiences from previous practices to enrich his new works. The results are vibrant, energetic paintings with exciting sculptural elements.

“For me, it’s all about the physicality of painting and connecting with my materials, tools and surfaces. It’s very much a performance, its raw, its primal and gives me an enormous sense of freedom when I paint”.

Marcus regularly exhibits his work and has commissioned works for commercial spaces, residential, hotels and individual collectors. To keep up with the latest exhibitions, art fairs and news, follow Marcus on Instagram @marcus.aitken.art
